Lifestyle Choices and Your Oral Health
At Brown & Gettings, DDS, we are passionate about not only your oral health, but your overall health as well. We want to stress to our patients how much your lifestyle and eating habits can truly impact your oral health. Your mouth is known as the gateway to the body, meaning that your mouth leads to the respiratory and digestive tracts. What you consume and your daily habits can lead to not only problems with your oral health, but can lead to long-term problems with your overall health as well. You can make certain lifestyle choices to ensure that you have a healthy body and a healthy mouth. These choices include:
Healthy Diet
We are sure the importance of a healthy diet for your overall health has been stressed to you for many years. The same is true for your oral health. A diet consisting of foods that are high in sugar, starch or acid can lead to decay and worn enamel. A poor diet can also lead to issues with gum disease. Be sure to eat plenty of protein and leafy greens, leaving sugar to be enjoyed in moderation.
Regular Exercise
Getting regular exercise does not have to be anything extreme. A brisk daily walk can do wonders for your mind and body. A tense and stressful lifestyle can lead to oral conditions such as bruxism, or teeth grinding. Daily exercise is known to help relieve stress, in turn relieving tension on your teeth.
Avoiding Tobacco Use
Smoking and tobacco use can significantly impact your oral and overall health. In terms of your oral health, including these habits in your lifestyle can lead to dry mouth, tooth decay, gum disease, permanently stained teeth, and is among the leading causes of oral cancer.
