Why Replace a Missing Tooth?
Dealing with a missing tooth can be stressful for many of our patients. If a front tooth is injured or needs to be removed, oftentimes patients are eager to replace the tooth as soon as possible as they don’t want to impact their beautiful smile. The tooth replacement discussion becomes more important for patients who are missing rear molars or teeth that may not be as visible. We are often asked if the tooth really needs to be replaced and if the needed procedure is really worth the time and money. Dr. Brown gives a wonderful explanation in the attached video and expresses the importance of replacing a missing tooth.
Dr. Brown explains that all of the teeth work together as a unit, each completing a certain job. When one of the supports is removed, it impacts the way the other teeth perform causing added stress to the remaining teeth. While the impact may not be seen immediately, over time this lack of support can lead to additional teeth failing or developing damage, causing discomfort as well as additional costs. You may begin to notice issues such as:
- Bite irregularity
- Difficulty chewing
- Deterioration of the jawbone
- Increase in wear of surrounding teeth
