Understanding Common Misconceptions About Veneers
Hey everybody, it’s Dr. Lee Brown from Freedom Dental of West Chester.
Today I want to talk a little bit about veneers. There are a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings about what veneers are and what they aren’t.
One of the first things people think is that veneers should look like veneers. They assume you should be able to spot them because they’re bright white. While some people choose veneers because they want to brighten their smile and whitening isn’t the best fit, most of the time our goal is to make veneers look so natural that no one even knows you have them.
You want someone to look at you and say, “Oh my gosh, beautiful smile. You look so young. What are you doing differently?” You don’t want them to look at you and say, “You have four veneers.” The goal is for them to look completely natural.
Veneers Are Not Just Cosmetic
Another common misconception is that veneers are only for celebrities and are only done for cosmetic reasons.
The truth is that many of the veneers we place are done for functional reasons to actually strengthen teeth, not just to improve appearance. Just like remodeling a kitchen, you want the final result to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. We work to find that balance.
Veneers Can Be a Conservative Treatment
Many people also think that getting veneers means your teeth have to be filed down into pegs. That’s simply not the case.
If you work with a great doctor and team who know what they’re doing, veneers can be one of the least invasive options to strengthen, protect, and enhance your smile. There is a lot of training and understanding behind this treatment, and it’s amazing what can happen when you have the right doctor and the right team helping you.
I hope this helps answer some of those basic questions about dental veneers. If you have specific questions about yourself, a family member, or a loved one, and whether veneers may be an option for you, please contact us. We’d be happy to talk you through your options.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are thin restorations that can improve the appearance of teeth and, in many situations, help strengthen them. According to Dr. Lee Brown, veneers are not only used for cosmetic purposes, but are also placed for functional reasons when appropriate.
Do veneers look fake?
No. Dr. Lee Brown explains that the goal is typically for veneers to look so natural that other people don’t realize you have them. Rather than standing out, well-designed veneers should blend naturally with your smile.
Are veneers only for celebrities?
No. While veneers are often associated with celebrity smiles, Dr. Lee Brown explains that many patients receive veneers for functional reasons, including strengthening teeth, not just improving appearance.
Do veneers require filing teeth into pegs?
Not necessarily. Dr. Lee Brown says this is a common misconception. He explains that when veneers are planned and performed by an experienced dentist and team, they can be one of the least invasive options to strengthen, protect, and enhance a smile.
Can veneers improve both function and appearance?
Yes. According to Dr. Lee Brown, veneers are often planned with both goals in mind. Like any quality restoration, the objective is to create a result that is functional while also providing a natural-looking smile.
